HUNTING THE FLYWAY

It was a gray, foggy day, late in September when we departed Eureka-Arcata Airport in northern California along with Dave Trobitz, John Peterson and Jim Adams. We were all eagerly looking forward to a fantastic hunting trip. We met Mike in Seattle and all flew on to Edmonton together where we spent the night. On Sunday afternoon, Bobby Lindsay, the owner of Pokolodi Guide Service, transported us to Lloydminster. The weather was mild but overcast. Upon arrival there was a lot of talk about the effects of the drought on the bird population.

On Monday, the first day our guide Cory took us to a pea field where we were able to bag our limits of honkers (32) and five ducks.

The next day the clouds gave way to clear and cold weather.  Upon arriving at our new field, we could feel the crunch of the frozen ground as we put out our decoys.  As usual, clear and cold equaled low numbers; 6 honkers, no ducks.  Very disappointing!

Day three brought high winds, clouds, and broken records. Over coffee, Shotgun Bob assured our foursome that this was going to be the shoot of the three day hunt. We weren't disappointed. Minutes before shooting time, the sound of wings and the shapes of ducks and geese filled the skies. Wave after wave of birds began flying over us. Bobby called them right into our spread. Three hours later, out of ammunition, the count was on...... Honkers 32, snow geese 80, and mallards 6 totaling 118 birds.....a new morning shoot record (29.5 birds per gun) for Pokolodi outfitting! Thank you Bobby, Shotgun Bob and Cory for making our trip worthwhile.
