WON hunters slay the geese on 'best yet' Saskatchewan hunt October 5, 2001 By BILL KARR, WON Staff Writer LLOYDMINSTER, Saskatchewan, Canada - Western Outdoor News' most successful WON HUNTS event, our early season goose and duck hunt in Saskatchewan with Pokolodi Outfitting, pulled off the best first hunt ever on Sept. 19-22, and that's hard to do when every previous hunt has been declared a major success. Our first hunt, scheduled for Sept. 16-19 was postponed to Oct. 7-10 due to erratic airline flights, but the second hunt Sept. 19-22 went as scheduled with 25 hunters and only one no-show. Those who came on the hunt certainly didn't regret it, and there were no major problems transporting firearms and shells at the airlines. On the very first shooting day, Sept. 20 WON Hunts assistant Mel Tucker joined up with the father son teams of Dale and Chris Krabbe and Danny and William Stotler for 35 honkers and 5 specks by 8:10 a.m. with guide Lyndon of Pokolodi Outfitting. The Limit is 8 dark geese, 20 snows and 8 ducks a day. WON On-The Spot That same day Robert Roppe, James Conrad, John Boyce and Greg Braun ended up with 4 honkers, 6 snow geese, 12 pintail, 20 mallards and 4 Hungarian partridge. Guide Randy Hubert took Finlay Williams, Mike Bewsey and Ken Lester to 10 honkers and 17 ducks, while guide Jake took his 5 hunters to limits of ducks at 40 birds plus 10 honkers and 19 snow geese. On the next day came one of the best hunts ever, when owner Bobby Lindsay guided Mel Tucker, Greg Braun, John Boyce, James Conrad and Robert Roppe to Full limits of honkers, 40 Birds, by 7:30, then proceeded to shoot snow geese for another 71 whites. A total of 111 geese for 5 hunters (22 average). Amazingly, Bobby called in another group, which arrived at 8:35, and shot even more birds. That same day, Lyndon took his 4 hunters out for 14 honkers, 1 speck and 10 snows for 25 geese, and Randy's group shot limits of specks, 24, plus 15 honkers and 20 snow geese. Guide Jon Lindsay found 40 honkers for his group of 5 for full limits and Jake's 6 hunters shot 32 honkers. Obviously, every day is not a "limit" day in Canada, which is understandable when you realize you can only hunt geese until noon and to shoot a "limit" of geese requires each hunter to shoot 8 dark geese and 20 white geese. And then there are those huge flocks of mallard and pintail coming through your decoys! Of course, you can only retain two possession limits, and every hunter ended up with his 16 dark geese, 16 ducks and many white geese. Hunts are conducted out of dry field blinds that are set up each morning in different fields based on where the spotters have found birds, and there's no lying on the ground or in the mud. The blinds are stand up style, comfortable and leave plenty of room for everyone, there is some work required in the morning for those who are able in setting up the blinds and decoys. |
